Chapter Twenty

Bryce pulled up in front of Richard's home after work on Friday night following his first week as the 'Big Cheese Office Manager' like he'd teased his co-worker Pam at the end of the first day.

All the way home, and throughout dinner tonight, he had been thinking about this week's work. The new team worked well together, helping prepare for the move to the new office. He'd be glad to take all of them with him as his staff, which was what the plan had been depending on the working dynamics of the new crew.

He'd been careful to spend even his lunch times with his new team, making sure they thought about other things during that break. His original plan during lunch was to get to know Tawny better, and he'd learned quite a bit about all of the team as a result of off-work topics discussed around the table.

In fact, the one he knew less about than any of the others was Tawny. She had a habit of dropping questions into the conversation which really steered the talk away from herself and put the focus on someone else.

As far as his keeping his promise to her about her private life, he'd decided that the topic of her having no next of kin is not one which would generally come up in conversation with Richard, and if it did, Bryce could simply tell his boss what was in the file and let him question her further if he wanted additional information. He wouldn't be breaking his promise to Tawny then, nor be lying to his boss.

The brief line in the file...'no next of kin'...had given Bryce the answer she wasn't married, but he wanted more information. He wanted to find out who his competition was if he decided to follow his heart and ask her out on a date. So he'd questioned her about it at the end of the first day.

He'd loved the answers she'd given as she had defended him about his sister being blind and the cute way she'd blushed when she'd put her foot in her mouth.

Yet here he was, four days later, still knowing almost nothing about her. He'd watched her during work. There seemed to be an almost physical connection between them, because as they'd be working, if he watched her too closely, she seemed to sense that and look up at him.

Bryce would smile at her, receive a smile back from her, and then they'd look away from each other and continue to work. Twice, though, he had to leave the room to keep from showing how much he wanted to take her in his arms and simply kiss her senseless.

Once, when he'd taken a stack of files from her to load into the next file box, their hands had brushed each other, and a tingle like an electrical current had zipped up his arm.

She must have felt the same thing because her head jerked up to look at him, her eyes wide in her delicate face, surprise in those deep brown eyes.
